Free SMS broadcast – GSMS

Posted in Ideas, News on January 30th, 2009 by Jym – Be the first to comment

Xie Er & I was toying with the idea. Lo’ & behold, XE really coded it! http://www.xieer.com/freesms/index.php

To use Gsms, you’ll need:

  • Google Calendar account
  • Setup GCal SMS mobile notification (find out how here),
  • Set to 5 mins SMS alert before event & invitations

I will be integrating his system to TwitterSG to achieve Twitter SMS notifications!

SMS notify on “Replies”/”Direct Message” or the entire friend timeline? Too many messages in the timeline! Arggghh!

Anyway, there are many useful applications/abuses, for example a team notification. And the nice thing is that it also creates an event entry in the receipents’ calendar.

It will be nice to have a feature to create groups of email addresses to broadcast. Also, it is now hardcoded to Singapore’s timezone, how about International users?

Post in the comments if you have any other ideas!

What is TwitterSG all about?

Posted in Ideas, Opinions on January 21st, 2009 by Jym – 4 Comments

A fellow Twitter user, dotcombum asked me “What is TwitterSG all about?” It really depends how one look at question. In a nutshell, it allows users in Singapore to SMS-tweet to a local number. I guess it will be hard for Twitter to catch on in Singapore without SMS (aka device) notifications.

This begs another question: Why bother!? We are so well connected here in Singapore with our super-duper broadband. Well I guess if one were to stick his head in front of the PC screen for 24×7, “Why bother to SMS?” will easily come to mind.

Fortunately, I do not stick in front of my machine for 24×7, I do go out and sometimes feel like micro-blogging with SMS. Soon, I will be adding more useful SMS commands like free SBS bus arrival time SMS reply using Google API and series of guides to “opensource” this messaging system.

Stay tuned!
